I AM NOT Ready For This

Cooper is starting to drop his afternoon nap. I knew it because he's taking forever to get to sleep at naptime and then last week his preschool teacher mentioned it to me. There are a couple of other kids in Cooper's class at the same stage. They have a 2 hour rest time after lunch (12:30-2:30) during which they have nap mats to rest on. His teacher will have Cooper and his classmates rest for 1 hour then they can look at books if they stay quiet for the other hour. This is OK, but now I feel like Cooper needs to get to bed earlier at night. Right now it's around 7:30. On the positive side of all this he is starting to sleep longer in the mornings. A few days this week and last I have had to wake him up at 6:30. So, there is improvement on that end, but I am not ready for him to give up the nap time on weekends. I also don't know that 11 hours is really enough for Cooper. I use his nap time to do things around the house, run an errand on my own while Ben is at home with Cooper, or just relax and have quiet time myself or catch up with Ben on the week. Also, I have 12 weeks off this summer with the new baby, and during this time Cooper will be out of preschool the whole time-- his last week of preschool is actually the same week as my due date. I think a quiet/rest period will be in order even if no sleep actually happens.

It seems like a lot of the May kids are dropping their naps lately! Nathan dropped his when he was 2.5 and it wasn't as bad as I had thought it'd be... good luck!

We had to struggle to get Michael to keep taking a nap on weekends, even though he was napping fine at daycare. He pretty much dropped the nap after Katie was born. It was nice, in a way, because he and I got some alone time while she was sleeping. We have quiet time with TV for about an hour a day. It works out well.

Michael dropped his nap over a year ago, and I still miss it. I'm sorry that Cooper couldn't hold out for a longer time for you.

Analese dropped her nap in late summer/early fall. I still miss it so very much! We do try to at least have some quiet time, and she is getting better at that. She will sit in her room and look at books or play with her doll house. And bedtimes are a bit easier when she is tired from not napping. But I still really really miss it...SIGH.....

I don't know what I would have done if J had dropped his nap before the baby was born LOL. Those first few weeks his naptime was pretty much my only rest during the day. Now that Jr. is 4 months old most days when I'm home with them I can get them both taking a nap in the afternoon together, but that does mean J stays up later. Which actually works out b/c the baby goes to bed by 7:30pm so when J gets to stay up it's often our only one-on-one time.
