Last night at around 11:30 Cooper suddenly started coughing that loud, barky cough that can only mean one thing: croup. He has had this once before, I had it a lot when I was younger, so I was thinking, no big deal, we'll get through the night and see the pediatrician in the morning. Except, this was bad. Cooper was really coughing and struggling to breathe. You know how you just know you have to get in for treatment right away? Ben and I knew, so we got over there quickly. On a night like last night it's good to be only 1 block from the hospital. When we got there the ER was quite busy. I've only made 2 other trips to the ER since we've been here, but neither time was nearly as busy as last night. However, they got Cooper through registration fairly quickly and into a room so that we could start a breathing treatment. It was a long wait for the doctor, but he confirmed the croup, and also relieved my concerns about his lungs and other respiratory issues, and gave a dose of a steroid medicine to help open up Cooper's airways. By the time we got home it was almost 2 am. Predictably, Cooper was awake early this morning. Around 5:45 he woke with some more coughing, but not as severe as earlier in the night. I am following up with his pediatrician today, but, knock on wood, he's on the way to recovery. And, a big long nap. Or two.
Cooper was excited to go to daycare today because he's starting to transition into the preschool room (which he loves), and today they are having a football party for the Super Bowl, and it's music class day, but obviously recovering is more important. I will never forget where we were two years ago when he was hospitalized with pneumonia and bronchiolitis. The worst week ever, for all of us, to date.

A few days into his stay, here he is on February 3, 2007

If I could take away any illness he has and take it on myself there would be no question that I would as I am sure any mother would. I never want to see him suffer. My heart aches to this day to remember how sick he was and how quickly it happened. I pray for his continued health and am thankful for all the days that he is healthy.

I'm so sorry he's sick again! I remember those pictures and him being hospitalized the first time. He looks so tiny and puny! Good call taking him in. Now hopefully he'll start to feel better for the weekend.
So sorry to hear he is sick again! I would definitely take on any of these illnesses for my kids.
Our worst week was the week in special care when the boys were born. It's kinda nice to start it off with the worst!
I hope Cooper is feeling better..Poor Guy...
