The New Adventures of Flat Stanley

Here's the Flat Stanley Adventure we had this week, and some history about our town thrown in too....

After a 1,477 mile trip Flat Stanley arrived in the mail at our house. After the long journey Flat Stanley was ready to see the sights in town! First, we drove to Plum Island to take Flat Stanley to see the Atlantic Ocean. It was too cold to swim in the ocean, but we had fun at the beach anyway!

Our next adventure with Flat Stanley took us to the lighthouse on Plum Island. We learned that this is called the Newburyport Harbor Light. The station was originally built in 1788 but the existing lighthouse in the picture was not built until 1898.

We continued our lighthouse journey with Flat Stanley and traveled back from Plum Island to downtown Newburyport. There we checked out the Newburyport Harbor Range Light. You can just see it in the background of the picture of Ben, Cooper and Flat Stanley. This lighthouse was built in 1873 and was built to help guide sailors from the Atlantic Ocean to the Merrimac River.

Next we stopped at the Custom House Maritime Museum. The Coast Guard was founded here in 1790 and the fourth Coast Guard ship, the Massachusetts, built here in 1791. The museum contains exhibits of original ships, recovered shipwreck items, and the Coast Guard room. Before it was a museum, the Custom House was the focal point of the town because all overseas goods were checked here.

Our last stop downtown was at the church we attend, St. Paul's Episcopal Church. It is the oldest continuing Episcopal Church in Massachusetts and was founded in 1711. The church has a bell made by Paul Revere, it is one of five remaining bells from his foundry in Boston.

After all of our adventures during the day, Flat Stanley was tired! He played with Cooper and his toys for a while, and then they both went to sleep!
